Yes 10 things about the Yulin ‘dog-eating festival’ of
China that will make you so furious you’d want to join
the fight against it right away.
1) In 2011, the festival went on for 10 days
wherein more than 15,000 dogs were slaughtered
and eaten. This is only an estimated figure and
the numbers can be higher.
2) Dogs are skinned alive, torn apart, smashed
with hammers and cut with chainsaws and even
boiled and set on fire, alive. A lot of people at the
festival also engage in public torturing of these
poor souls by dragging and running over them
Machinery & cars .
3) Not only strays but even pet dogs with their
collars still on are stolen from all over the
country. Close to 226,800 kilograms of dog meat
is consumed every year. The city of Yulin has
over 100 dog slaughter houses that butcher as
many 2000 dogs a day during the festival.
4) Dogs are crammed into small cages and sent
on a grueling journey to Yulin. This journey alone
is so traumatic and uncomfortable that thousands
of dogs die due to dehydration or starvation on
the way itself. There is no exact figure of how
many dogs have been slaughtered and eaten since
the beginning of this brutal festival.
5) The Chinese believe eating dog meat stimulates
internal heat and brings good luck and health!
6) There’s no animal protection law in China.
Looking at the unprecedented global outrage over
the festival, Chinese’s authorities told the people
of Yulin to stop using the word ‘Dog Meat’ and
continue with the festival.
7) This isn’t the only dog-meat eating festival in
China. In 2011 Jinhua Hutou Dog Meat Festival
was banned for the slaughter of hundreds dogs
within days.

8) Though the Chinese government claims that it
has warned the people of Yulin, many believe that
the festival might have started earlier this year to
avoid interference.
9) The festival has also led to a surge in the
number of rabies cases in the city of Yulin.
10) This year, as many as 15,000 dogs are
expected to be stolen and eventually butchered to
death in Yulin.
If you are reading this, I urge you to share this
piece as much as possible to stop this cruelty.
Yes go ahead !!
Every June , thousands of Chinese tourists and
locals descend upon the southern city of Yulin to
celebrate the summer solstice by merrily drinking
grain alcohol and eating sweet lychee dog meat.
As many as 10 ,000 hapless dogs are slaughtered
each year for human pleasure at the Yulin Dog
Meat - Eating Festival . Locals call it “ tradition, ” even
though the festival itself has only been held since
2009 .
Dogs to be sold for food at the festival arrive from
hundreds of miles around Yulin . They are crowded
into small cages which are then stacked on
transport trucks for the harrowing journey . Many of
them die . Many others suffer from dehydration ,
illness and sheer terror.
But it’ s when the doomed dogs arrive in Yulin that
the real horror show begins . Not too long ago,
dogs were slaughtered right in the streets of Yulin.
Lately, due to international outrage and a
subsequent order from authorities to keep things
low- key, the animals are killed in secret . The silver
lining to this is that it’ s a sure sign that the
festival , once promoted by the government, is
slowly but surely becoming a serious headache for
authorities .
While some Chinese tout unproven benefits of
eating dog, doing so can actually be quite
hazardous to your health . Canines carry rabies and
other diseases, and many dogs destined for diners’
mouths have been poisoned. You may also be
eating someone’ s beloved companion— animal
welfare advocates estimate that as many as 10
percent of dogs sold for meat in China are stolen
pets .
Animal advocates in China and around the world
are hard at work trying to put an end to the
grotesque Yulin Dog Meat Festival . And they ’ re
starting to see some hopeful results. According to
China’ s Xinhua News Agency, the number of Yulin
restaurants serving dog meat has plummeted from
69 to 17. In past years , as many as 10, 000 dogs
were killed for each festival . In 2014, ‘ only ’ around
2, 000 were killed, according to the Yulin Center for
Animal Disease Control and Prevention .
Education and activism have put a big dent in dog
eating in China . The Hong Kong SPCA and other
groups host seminars and other events aimed at
discouraging the consumption of dog meat
throughout the nation. On the streets, activists
intercept trucks loaded with dogs bound for the
butcher ’ s blade and often purchase their freedom .
Chinese celebrities are also doing their part , with
stars like former NBA All- Star Yao Ming and
renowned actress Yang Mi helping to energize a
burgeoning animal rights movement in a nation
not previously known for its stellar stewardship of
its four -legged residents.
So what can you do to help end the Yulin Dog
Meat Festival ? Signing petitions and donating to
animal advocacy groups fighting the festival are
the obvious and easiest ways you can get
involved. You can also raise awareness of the
issue through social media , blogs and websites .
And leading by example by making a decision to
eschew eating all meat sends a strong message to
those around you that you value all animal .
Animal-rights groups are trying to stop
a solstice festival in Yulin, China, where
they say thousands of dogs and cats are
eaten each year. The so-called Yulin

intense scrutiny with the rise of social

Animal-rights groups across the world
are calling on Chinese officials to put a
stop to a solstice celebration in which
thousands of dogs and cats are
supposedly killed for their meat and
eaten. The so-called Yulin Dog Meat
Festival, in the Guangxi region of
China, was reportedly banned by the
local government, but advocates say the
ban has not stopped the slaughter of
the animals, according to numerous
press reports.
One California group, the Duo Duo
Welfare Project, launched a petition
calling on the Yulin city governor, Chen
Wu, to “act in the interest of public
health.” The petition has gained more
than 250,000 supporters since it was
launched last month. Andrea Gung, a
representative of Duo Duo, told the
U.K.’s Independent she witnessed the
dog meat festival last year. “Some dogs
were still wagging their tails when they
were being killed in the
slaughterhouse,” she said.
In a video posted on YouTube, Gung
said an estimated 90 percent of the dogs
killed at the festival each year are
stolen from urban households and
farmers by thieves who then turn
around and sell them. “Stealing and
selling a dog is easy money,” she said.
As the BBC reported , opinions are
divided about how widespread the
practice is. The Yulin festival has come
under intense scrutiny in recent years
with the rise of social media. Gung told
the BBC her group is specifically
targeting Western activists as a way to
bring more global awareness of the
issue.
Activists in North America, Europe and
Australia have been mobilizing on
Facebook and Twitter, and through
petition sites like Change.org. Since
May, almost 250,000 tweets with the
hashtag #StopYulin2015 have been sent.
The campaigns have gotten the
attention of some celebrities, including
the comedian Ricky Gervais -- an
avowed animal-rights advocate -- who
tweeted a petition last week from
activists in Canada.
